In 17th century Moldavia, the witch Asa Vajda (Barbara Steele), is brutally executed by her own brother. Before she dies, she places a curse on her brother’s descendants. Two hundred years later, Asa returns from the grave to try to take over the body of her look-alike descendant Katia (also Steele) to take her revenge. Banned in the UK until 1968 due to its violent scenes, the film was surrounded in controversy but launched the careers of Bava and Steele. We pair the gothic horror classic with Maya Deren’s surrealist film shows repetitive, spider-like imagery of a witch’s ritual.
