Here Be Witches | Symposium

In this event, we deep dive into the myriad of forms the witch has taken in film and television, from the romantic heroines of I Married A Witch and the goth teens of The Craft, television depictions of witches in Sabrina, Charmed, True Blood and American Horror Story and the witchploitation of the seventies, as well as some of questions that arise around representation, sexuality and empowerment.

Mirror, Mirror

A not-quite-direct-to-video gem from the early 90s, this female-scripted and directed gothic slasher looks at the toxic lifecycle of bullying and teenage despair, and marked the last major role of enigmatic actress (and Winona Ryder look-a-like) Rainbow Harvest.

She's Right Behind You

Vengeful female ghosts are a staple in folklore, horror fiction and cinema. Disembodied and freed from the patriarchal grasp and domination of the female body, they are empowered to avenge those who wronged them when they were alive. The Lady in White, The Slit-Mouthed Woman, La Llorona, Bloody Mary… they’re all versions of the same figure. Feminist horror film collective The Final Girls take over the Masonic Temple to explore this recurring ghostly figure.

Happy Birthday To Us!

Since we started The Final Girls, we’ve been asked the same question over and over again - why do you like this stuff? Sometimes there’s an underlying judgement in that question - how can you like this stuff?

For our first birthday party, we thought we’d like to share the stage with other horror enthusiasts - and ask the question: why do you love horror

#14 XX in Bristol

The Final Girls proudly present a one-night-only nationwide screening of XX, the first and only all-female horror anthology. With shorts directed by genre heavyweights Karyn Kusama (The Invitation), Jovanka Vuckovic (The Captured Bird),  Roxanne Benjamin (V/H/S, Southbound) and featuring the directorial debut of St. Vincent, this is a horror milestone. These tales of terror, blood and mayhem test the boundaries of what genre can be, loosely connected by the eerily beautiful animations of Sofia Carrillo. Whilst not directly related to one another, each short has a distinctly feminine theme, tackling and subtly subverting expectations placed on women and the roles they play.
